ALLAHABAD: Traders and social activists under the banner of Udyog Vyapar Mandal undertook a cleaning drive at Rasoolabad ghat on Sunday.

Social worker Shyam Sunder Singh Patel said people are polluting the Ganga by throwing garbage and other waste products into the river.

“This should be stopped by constructing a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Rasoolabad ghat. In this connection the state government would also be petitioned for ensuring that STP is constructed within the stipulated time and is made functional before the Kumbh Mela in 2012-13,” Patel said.

Traders and social activists collected polythene bags and garbage at the the ghat and deposited it in the nearby garbage dump. Those present included traders, social activist Abhishek Sharma, scientist Sandeep Joshi from Pune and an emissary of Shankaracharya of Badrikashram, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati.
