Save Ganga Now: Anna wants PM to intervene

Governance Now – 22nd March, 2012

“Accept prof Agrawal’s demands for a clean Ganga”

Anna Hazare has written a letter to prime minister Manmohan Singh requesting his government to accept the agenda put forward by prof GD Agarwal who is on a fast for the past 67 days demanding a ‘nirmal and aviral’ (clean and flowing) Ganga.

Hazare in his letter of Thursday has also asked the PM to immediately call a meeting of the National Ganga River basin Authority and stop work on the dams till any decision is taken in the authority meeting.

In his letter, Hazare has mentioned that a large irrigated area of the country will suffer due to the formation of dams which will also hurt sentiments of the local people. He has further added that hurting people’s sentiment is not good for the health of a democracy.

It may be recalled that prof Agarwal was airlifted from Varanasi on March 19 and shifted to the All India institute of Medical Sciences after complaints of chest pain. Anna and his associates had paid a visit to prof Agarwal on that day itself to show solidarity with his cause.
